I just got shot.

4 times. With deadly diseases and stuff at the travel medicine clinic. My arms hurt so bad now. The last time I got an injection also happened to be my second day of work as a dishwasher. I can't even tell you how much pain that + 8 hours of scrubbing dishes and lifting heavy things caused.

After 20 minutes of waiting around "for my safety and comfort" (a.k.a. for their lawsuit-avoidance strategy) it was determined that I wasn't going to succumb to the 3-in-a million chance of keeling over and dying on the spot, so they let me go. I hadn't finished my lollipop yet and it was only after a few minutes of walking around the streets of Vancouver sucking on it that I realized how strange I must look.

I think the most amusing part of the day was the nurse who gave me my shots: "You're not pregnant?" I shook my head. "You don't get pregnant next month, either." It was just so deadpan and I think the vast majority of people she says that to will only be getting pregnant accidentally, in which case the warning won't do much good.

On the plus side, I'm all immunized and ready for a nice Christmas vacation in Colombia! I'm visiting my parents' new home and then going to a tropical island for the first time ever.

After the cervical cancer needles I am so, so scared of needles. Argh.

Have a good time in Colombia, it sounds fun.

Gardasil? I was looking at the prices for various vaccinations today. That one was 3 x $150 = $450. Crazy.

    Have fun in December!

I have no idea but I know it's $500 here outside of school.
All girls in Australia (or at least my state) get it for free.

Damn! My arms hurt reading that. Colombia sounds like fun! Is it your first time there?

Yep. But I've been to Argentina and Chile (and Sao Paulo airport) in the past.

Oh, and I'm really excited about the fruit. My dad's been telling me about all the delicious things he's had down there. I've heard that there are thousands of varieties of fruit in existence, yet we North Americans would be hard-pressed to list off more than, say, 30. That's what mass cultivation will do for you. What a waste of taste. The immunologist told me to avoid raw foods, but forget that!

You will have to share information about fascinating fruit! (and the trip)

Uhmm...as fascinating as the fruits may be, I really would avoid eating ones that don't have a peel (like a banana or an orange, for example). I know Colombia =/= India, but in India you can get so sick you die from eating the fruit.

What is the water situation? It's probably better than India (where one has to brush teeth with a water bottle).

Well I'll let my parents advise me. We'll be in their house some of the time so we can peel our own fruit. I've travelled around quite a bit and honestly, I can't remember ever getting sick off tap water, even when others have. But I'll be careful.

I would definitely be tempted. It is good that your parents are there and can advise you.

    I am excited for you!
