It's a nice place to be because you can have actual intelligent arguments. At the same time there are people who can be total dicks, but there's just as many awesome people on here. Even if we all don't get along we all love the same band and most of us won't hold grudges over something said on a message board.

Welcome to forums, dude. You have to learn to not cross the line of being a complete jerk to people who are true douchebags online (whether it's about AFI or random stuff like offtopic.com), otherwise you'll both be suspended.
However, there's nothing wrong with coming right up to the line. Just don't take the extra step! :P
I think she's referring to the douchebags crossing the line. Including the ones who aren't getting in trouble for it for whatever reason.
I love the change. Plus AFI is probably the nicest band you'll ever meet. They have a positive attitude toward the fans, and it makes me feel good that people that famous spend so much of their personal time staying in touch with their fans.
Because for better or worse, we are an international online family. Not just a community, a family. We have the four fathers of the family - the band. Aunts and uncles - the band's crew (and I'm going to quite cheerfully slot Sonia and Gavin in here as well). And us fans are all the kid brothers and sisters kept in line by the older sibs - the mods (and again, Gavin and Sonia).
Sorry if it's a sucky euphemism, but it's the way I see it. I can't call us a community, because we're so much more.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and retired mods have the special position of being the older sibs that have moved out of home but still drop in every now and then to catch up

That's /exactly/ how I see it. :| It's kinda cute in a bizarre sort of way.
AFI, for me, goes beyond good music. Most of their songs are an expression of the deepest part of my soul. I know many of you feel the same way. This board is a way to reach out to like-minded people (even if we sometimes disagree.)
I've met a handful of people from the board, and each one has become a cherished friend. I look forward to meeting more of you in the future.

The mods and admins are the ones who keep the peace and set the guidelines for respect. Which only strengthens the appeal of this board because we're expected to realise that being spiteful or whatever is unnecessary, especially around people who share a common love for AFI. There are a few that aren't nice but as I see it it's silly to hate on family.
I think the fans are so good to the band because we appreciate the honesty that goes into their music and the fact that the guys remain uneffected by the expanding mass of the DF and their fame in the music world. The guys aren't jerks or anything, they haven't really taken advantage of being 'rockstars' in any negative way towards their fans. They want to give back to us through the DF and such, as if their music and existence wasn't enough for us to appreciate. That's why I at least continue to admire them as one of the greatest bands around these days.
