Gee, I don't know. I'm just not a big fan of sloppy music that isn't especially redeeming in terms of intensity. It sounds too harmless and flat for my liking. The lyrics make me cringe, too, so it would help if the vocals had been unintelligible.

To be fair, "quite bad" is probably a little harsh. It's really only the "Nervous Breakdown" portion that I find to be awful, but this band is not worth the hype either way IMO.

Black Flag is not worth the "hype"?

    ...

You sound like they're the latest band made up of guys from 10 other now-defunct Boston bands that didn't release anything more than demo cassettes but got tons of rep on the B9 board, not one of the single most important bands in the history of punk and hardcore music.

It's cool that they're important and that they were good for their time, but that doesn't mean they're amazing. Especially The First Four Years.

If you're looking for something a little different, Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes are really good.

They might be too unconventional to really be considered hardcore (at least as far as sounding like Black Flag goes), but they're still worth checking out.

Left a word out of this sentence. Whoops.

Also, I'm probably a weirdo because my second favorite is My War.
