My sister wants to know the difference between black metal and death metal. I told her I'd make two playlists with tracks exemplifying the styles of each. I have the black metal one together, but I honestly don't listen to that much death metal. I've got plenty of 90s Swedish death metal, but the rest is mostly crossover stuff that I don't feel is entirely appropriate since she also has a hard time deciphering between certain kinds of hardcore and certain kinds of metal. So I've got the Gothenburg sound covered, but I'd like to give a broad sampling of the entire death metal genre. Anyone have any good suggestions?
Anything off Cryptopsy's None So Vile or Suffocation's Pierced From Within is a good representation of death metal. I'd also put in some stuff off Nile's Annihilation of the Wicked and Death's Individual Thought Patterns.
Speaking of black metal, I've been reading Lords of Chaos. Holy fuck, early 90s black metal dudes are huge fucking douchebags. Like beyond Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig times a billion to the Fred Durst degree plus Marilyn Manson level douchedom. Except like even more douchey because they're all total racist, sexist, homophobic, Nazi buttholes.
you definitely need some early Death, Possessed, and Morbid Angel on it. maybe some Winter and Autopsy. definitely what Corey said. and surely you have Carcass on it, yeah? and "Skull Full of Maggots" by Cannibal Corpse.
Anyone here into Howl? I just got their new album and it's killer. Sounds like a heavier, faster, more hellish version of Isis' earlier stuff.
