    Favor to ask...

I want to expose my friend to AFI, and this is someone who I believe has only heard the popular songs (ex: Miss Murder, GNG, LLW). I'm looking at putting together songs that can fit onto 2 CD's. I have a general idea of what songs I want included and I want it to be somewhat balanced between the albums, but I'm having trouble coming up with a good order to place them in. I was just wondering what anyone else thought I should include, and what would be the best way to make it all flow together? Thanks.

Less is more, two cds of music is really overwhelming to someone who isn't particularly interested in the band. Give him something close to ten songs, don't spend too much time worrying about it because the odds are he doesn't really care, just give him ten songs you think are really good

Well, since your doing it on two cd's you should do a little more than 18 songs (as to how AFI shows consist of 18 songs)

I'd suggest you pick the set list from the I heard a Voice dvd, as it contains some of the good AFI songs. but then instead i would replace the intro song with like, Torch Song...

Im just saying...feature all the songs from the DVD, and then add some stuff that you would like him to hear.

What I like to do when I am trying to introduce someone to afi is to split it into three categories. Answer that/ very proud of ya/shut your mouth and then black sails/aod/sts and then DU and CL
Why? this is how my brain logically does it.
People generally swing to one of these sections, so I would look at what they like for music already and put a large cluster of songs from that section. And then round it out with some of your favorite songs from the other sections.
Two cds might be overwhelming so you could give them the two cds separately. You could do an early years cd and a later years?

Unless you want to give them mostly new songs. Then you could use the set list from I heard a voice. It includes a few old songs but mostly new ones. And as far as "popular" songs go, the only really popular ones I use on afi mix tapes is gng and dotp. But that is just me.

I made a mix for my tattoo artist and had the same problem. I figured using chronology was the best was to have them flow together. I think the idea of an "early years" and "later years" 2-disc mix is good for someone who isn't familliar with their music. Pick the songs you like best to put on the CDs. I'd say, don't worry if it doesn't "flow." I personally think most full albums don't flow well (not just AFI, but in general that's my opinion) anyway. I agree with glassspiderwebs - only use the setlist from IHAV if you really only want to give them mostly new songs.

Why not just hand them STS and DU or AOD, or even CL? Why must they have some compilation?

This exactly. More specifically, just give your friend a copy of Sing The Sorrow. Think about it. If they really don't like it, they're probably not ever going to be into AFI that much. But they probably will like it, because it's amazing. If your friend really likes it, then maybe you can make them a mix to show them what AFI's other stuff is like. But seriously, to start off with, just burn them a copy of Sing the Sorrow (or let them borrow yours).
If you believe in your heart, now it's time to let go.

I would just buy them a new copy of sts for Christmas. Kill two birds with one stone.
