I'm trying to plan a trip to either or both of these cities but wanted to find out what the highlights are. What are your must see things to see, do, eat, stay, etc?

When do u plan to come over? If you're a history/museum buff, there's an annual open day for most museums in Montreal that you don't want to miss May 27th, free access to the museums.
You can get more ideas from Passport Pom http://www.visit-infoguide.com/ they have discount coupons for most attractions.
Must-see hmmm....let me think:
-Cresent street: for irish pubs, visit St-Denis street if you want a more francophone environment
-Downtown underground city: great for rainy days, lot of shops and shopping
-Old port: in winter time, you can skate, summer time: there are boats you can take
-Cosmodome: space museum thing, it's in Laval (north shore of Montreal)
-Jardin Botanique/Insecterium: for nature buff, it's almost near the olympic stadium
-Nature parks: http://ville.montreal.qc.ca/portal/p..._schema=PORTAL you can ski in winter time or bike during summer, it's free access. You can fish in some places or go to the beach (for some fee). The beach is so-so though, don't expect blue water, it's a lake.
-La Ronde: six flag park, make sure you go there is a specially marked coke for discount
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

My suggestion: Leave. Haha, no, I'm kidding. I've actually never been to Canada, but people say it's horrible.
Montreal is a wonderful city. Old Montreal is really beautiful to walk through in the summer time. Aux vives is a delicious
vegetarian restaurant. Fife bo tantic is one of my favourite places to dance.
And I'm subtle, subtle like a t-rex.
In Montreal, visit La Banquise for an amazing variety of poutine! Located near Parc La Fontaine and open 24 hours. For live music I also recommend Foufounes Electriques on Ste. Catherine.
Old Montreal.
Hmm La Banquise, I never tried it, I wonder if there are much vegetarian choices.
Yeah Foufounes Electriques (we call it sometimes "Fouf") was cool, I haven't been there in ages. What I miss is Syndrome, an alternative music bar but it's closed now. They used to play AFI songs and even Blaqk Audio, it was awesome.
